Hardware acceleration also brings with it more powerful effects and features not available in the free version, including many power-hungry Resolve FX. The fact that the software is used professionally for film and television is a testament to the quality of the effects, sound and editing control that can be achieved with the software. Being software aimed at professional use where multiple large raw video files are in use, this is an essential feature of the software.
One of the coolest new things in version 18 is automatic object selection. Simple monochrome shapes appear in the list, but hover over an entry, and your own clips in the timeline show how the transition will look in the viewer when applied. Not only that, some striking transitions are at your disposal in the Fusion Transitions section, including Camera Shake, Drop Warp, and Tunnel of Light. There’s also a free version of the software, which has fewer features, but is still impressive with powerful colour grading tools and is ideal for less demanding users. The usual suspects in the pro video editor market are Adobe Premiere Pro and Apple Final Cut Pro, but Davinci Resolve is right up alongside them in our list of the best video editing software.
